Like My Corgi Obsession

Let’s get this straight – I don’t have a corgi obsession. But we all have that one friend whose zeal for a cute animal trumps their love of most human beings.

Her love was devoted to the corgis. She followed 17 of them on Instagram, had a stuffed corgi named Corduroy and just recently, became a proud new corgi aunt – which prompted her to buy a coast to coast plane ticket from Portland to Orlando to see.

And one day, as we were reunited in Taiwan, she said “Phuong’s love for stocks is like my love for corgis”.

Now, I had never thought of myself as one who was obsessed with anything.

But as I sat in front of my computer screen (after a two week long vacation in Asia) browsing the web as one does when they want to do anything but work – something dawned on me. 

For the last year, I had the habit of typing “FIN” in my web browser and having it automatically populate with “finance.google.com”. My top visited sites were Google Finance, FINVIZ and OptionsHouse. And when I wasn’t checking the market, I was on Google Drive tracking and analyzing the current position of my recent trading strategies.

Corgi lovers are pretty good at spotting corgis from afar but I guess my friend also had a talent for spotting other obsessions – she spotted my obsession of the business world.

Then I thought, “What else do I do that fuels this ‘obsession’”?

The answer laid in an endless array of texts and emails sent to friends discussing potential merger and acquisition deals, stocks that were undervalued, markets that needed to be tapped and other bits that would get my mind racing. It began to build in hours spent sharing ideas and giving advice to my bosses. It solidified as I noted my ideas and it quickly became a laundry list of ideas. And it was validated when multiple friends would throw out the phrase “we should start a business together”.  

This realization pushed me to create this site. As I will probably mention time and time again, I don’t have the highest pedigree, I may not be the most articulate person in the room, but I do have an ability to connect and build excitement. So it is my hope to start this blog in order to grow ideas and spur action.
